Connecting Your Camera - Understanding Data Rates and other Considerations

What are the different camera interfaces that link to the control PC and why are there so many different types? Each connection has the same objectives:

  • To transfer image data from the camera to the control PC so it can be further processed and,
  • Control of camera itself

In this article, our Product Specialist for Microscopy Cameras, Dr Alan Mullan looks at why different cameras use different interfaces and what are the differences between the connection types.

We will also cover protocol overheads and how they affect practical data transfer rates as well as the maximum data and frame rates that are possible with different camera examples.
