Andor CB2 sCMOS Series by First Light Imaging

The Andor CB2 Series is a family of ultra-high performance scientific CMOS cameras offering a broad range of resolutions from 0.5 MP up to 24.5 MP, designed to deliver exceptional speed with global shutter, high detail fidelity while preserving low noise.

The CB2 Series is flexible: it comes in three versions, five models, to cover the largest scope of applications in research and industry:

  • Andor CB2 High Resolution - Featuring a 24.5 MP back-illuminated sensor for exceptional detail and long-exposure performance with 2x2 on-chip binning for even faster acquisition.
  • Andor CB2 High Speed - Optimised for rapid frame rates up to 1594 fps with resolutions from 0.5 to 7.1 MP, perfect for speed-critical experiments.
  • Andor CB2 UV - Specially optimised for ultraviolet imaging (200–400 nm), with quantum efficiency above 50% at 300 nm and high frame rates up to 194 fps.

Andor CB2 Series Common Features

Low dark current sCMOS - CB2 uses sensor cooling down to -20°C for minimization of darkcurrent. Combined with low amplifier glow from stacked chip design this allows access to longer exposures, up to several minutes. This broadens the application flexibility of this model, making it ideal for long exposure luminescence measurements and astro-photometry.

Selectable readout speeds - 8-bits, 10-bits, 12-bits and 14-bits (HDR) or 16-bits (HDR) modes: Trade-off between frame rate and dynamic range. HDR mode is available to capture the full image information across a very wide pixel depth.

Temperature management - Air cooling provides effective cooling to -5°C for most applications. Liquid cooling boosts cooling down to -40°C providing the lowest possible dark current at long exposures. The fan can be entirely disabled for vibration sensitive applications such as electrophysiology.

Low temperature qualified - CB2 series has been qualified for operation down to -40 °C ambient, ideal for observing in high altitude harsh environments.

Adjustable gain - Default options for selection of High or Low sensitivity allows easy adjustment for sensitivity, or extended dynamic range. In addition, advanced users can fine-tune sensitivity and dynamic range to suit their specific requirements using 24dB analog amplification gain and up to 48 dB of digital amplification gain.

Global Shutter architecture - By incorporating a global shutter architecture, a “snapshot” image can be taken which provides true temporal accuracy across the field of view. This avoids the temporal distortions that can be found when imaging dynamic processes using the more common rolling shutter sCMOS designs.

Multi-windowing and Region of Interest (ROI) - User-selectable regions of interest allow cropped sensor operation to boost frame rates, while multiple regions of interest can also be set enhancing application possibilities.

Compact design - CB2 Series packages a large area sensor, thermoelectric and liquid cooling and multiple connectivity options within a space efficient design, keeping the overall size of the camera to a minimum. The dimensions of the CB2 Series are 183.7 (CXP) - 180.4 (GigE) x 93 x 77.5 mm (LxWxH), while weight is 1.3kg. This allows for ease of integration in most imaging and detection systems.

High speed data interface options - CB2 supports the high data output with high-speed data interface options. CoaXPress provides stable, low latency performance and GigE offers a user-friendly interface over longer distances. CB2 supports GigE Vision and compliant with GenICam standards.

On-chip 2x2 Binning - CB2 uniquely offers on-chip 2x2 binning of sCMOS pixels, allowing the native 2.74µm pixel to be converted to a 5.48µm pixel without doubling of read noise (which would otherwise be expected for sCMOS technology). This inherent optical flexibility significantly expands the application adaptability of the camera. (only available on CB2 High Resolution and CB2 UV)
