Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are essential pillars in a successful scientific organization. Years of research-driven arguments to build diversity and inclusion into scientific operations guide the work being done at AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy) facilities. The presenter reviews a model of an inclusive organization and how this framework is applied to DEI initiatives at the observatories in Chile. Resources that AURA and NSF’s NOIRlab (National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory) provide to broaden participation in the workplace are discussed. The efforts from the last 6 years of DEI work at AURA observatories demonstrate positive impacts on workplace culture policies, as well as useful lessons learned to developing a successful DEI program.
Alysha Shugart is an observing specialist at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory (formerly known as LSST). She relocated to Chile from the United States to take a position as a Science Operations Specialist for the Gemini South telescope. Once there, Alysha began to serve as a diversity advocate for the AURA centers in Chile. During her time as a diversity advocate, Alysha worked to bring different perspectives to the organization, including local Chilean D&I activists, lawmakers, anthropologists, and poets to create a culture of shared appreciation for diversity in thought. Alysha has devoted efforts to lead the DEI strategic plan for NSF’s NOIRlab, and worked to introduce more inclusive policies and a DEI network into NOIRlab and AURA.
