Astronomical observatories are key facilities in astrophysics and planetary science research delivering breakthrough understandings of the universe beyond Earth. Collection, concentration, and detection of light from objects in space has been the main function of astronomical telescopes and instruments for centuries, but new developments in science, technology, and research methods have continually driven the evolution of observatory design and operations.
In this webinar Dr Tom Seccull will take a holistic look at today’s modern astronomical observatories as tools of research, exploring how their design, location, and operation follows their scientific function. Particular attention will be given to the practical considerations faced when integrating a camera into an observatory and how the design of each may affect the performance of the other.
