Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) and Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) are some of the key non-invasive, laser-based optical diagnostics used to study the fine structure dynamics of liquids, gas, plasmas & flames or shockwaves.

A suite of detectors is typically required to address the different acquisition requirements (time-resolution, acquisition rates, spatial resolution). Scientific CMOS (sCMOS) technology addresses these challenges for PIV and PLIF setups using probing sources in the 10’s of Hz (up to few kHz for narrow field of views), while also offering higher dynamic range compared to interline-based or traditional CMOS-based detectors.

The iStar sCMOS provides simultaneously the fast gating (<100 ns), fast frame rates (10’s of Hz up to 4 kHz) and high dynamic range capabilities required for “slow” PLIF Imaging.
